Foundations of Interaction Design – Boxes and Arrows: The design behind the design

  • Probably written more for application developers than e-learning designers, this is an attempt to create some foundation characteristics to consider when designing interactions. Here’s the list of characteristics: Time (Pace, Reaction, Context), Metaphor, Abstraction, and Negative Space (Pause, Cessation of Thought, Inactivity).

  • Questions about “rapid authoring” or “rapid development” e-learning models. Are we just looking at iterative rapid prototypes? Are we just trying to slap something together quickly? Are instructional designers necessary, or can SMEs do it on their own?

But if it isn’t the tools, is it the process? Is RA simply the dropping of ADDIE in favour of quickly reiterated prototypes or indeed of making it up off the top of your head and getting it out there same day? If that’s the case why are we saying it needs instructional design?
